A timestamped audit log of every action performed on this server: power changes, OS reinstalls and cancellations, rescue-mode activations, IPMI sessions, network and private-network edits, monitoring toggles and BMC resets.

Each entry records what was done, who did it (a member of your organization, or the system for automatic actions), when, and the details of the change.

When this is worth reading

  • After an unplanned reboot. A restart someone triggered is recorded here; a crash isn't. That single distinction is usually the whole investigation.
  • When a reinstall didn't go as expected. The scheduled reinstall, and any cancellation of it, are both logged.
  • To confirm who accessed IPMI. Out-of-band access bypasses the OS entirely, so this log is the only place it appears.
