Backups are a fundamental part of any cloud infrastructure. CubePath Cloud provides an integrated backup system that protects your VPS servers with automatic and manual backups, securely stored on Proxmox Backup Server (PBS).
Types of Backups
CubePath Cloud offers two types of backups:
Automatic Backups
Automatic backups run once a day at the hour you configure (in UTC time). The system takes care of everything: creating the backup, managing retention, and deleting old backups when they exceed the configured retention period.
Manual Backups
Manual backups let you create a snapshot at any time. They are especially useful before making significant changes to your server, such as software updates, configuration changes, or migrations.
How to Enable Backups
During VPS Deployment
When creating a new VPS server, you can enable backups directly from the deployment form. Simply toggle the "Backups" switch and the system will configure automatic backups with default values:
-
Schedule hour: 03:00 UTC
-
Retention: 7 days
-
Max backups: 7
From Your VPS Panel
If you already have an active VPS, you can enable backups at any time:
- Log in to your Dashboard at cloud.cubepath.com
- Select the VPS you want to protect
- Click "Manage Backups" in the server header
- Toggle the "Automatic Backups" switch on
- Configure the parameters to your needs
- Click "Save Changes"
Backup Configuration
Once backups are enabled, you can customize the following parameters:
Schedule Hour
Defines what time of day the automatic backup will run. The value is set in UTC time (0-23). We recommend scheduling backups during low-activity hours to minimize performance impact on your server.
- US East (EST/EDT): Set between 07:00 - 09:00 UTC (02:00 - 04:00 local time)
- US West (PST/PDT): Set between 10:00 - 12:00 UTC (02:00 - 04:00 local time)
- UK (GMT/BST): Set between 02:00 - 04:00 UTC (02:00 - 04:00 local time)
- Central Europe (CET/CEST): Set between 02:00 - 04:00 UTC (03:00 - 05:00 local time)
Retention Days
The retention period defines how many days completed backups are kept before being automatically deleted. You can configure between 1 and 7 days.
For example, if you set retention to 7 days, any backup older than 7 days will be automatically removed by the system.
Max Backups
Defines the maximum number of backups kept simultaneously. You can configure between 1 and 10 backups. When the limit is reached, the oldest backup is automatically deleted after the new one completes.
Creating a Manual Backup
To create a manual backup of your server:
- Go to the Backups panel of your VPS
- Click the "Create Backup" button
- The backup will be queued and start automatically
Note: You can only create a manual backup if backups are enabled for your server. Your VPS must be in active or stopped status, and there cannot be another backup in progress.
Backup progress is shown in real time with a progress bar. Manual backups will be labeled as "Manual" to differentiate them from automatic ones.
Restoring from a Backup
Restoring allows you to return your server to the exact state it was in when the backup was created.
Steps to restore:
- Go to the Backups panel of your VPS
- Find the backup you want to restore from (it must have "Completed" status)
- Click the "Restore" button
- Confirm the action in the confirmation dialog
Important considerations:
- Your VPS will be stopped during the restore process
- All current data will be replaced with the data from the selected backup
- This action cannot be undone
- You cannot restore if another operation is in progress (reinstall, resize, etc.)
Deleting a Backup
If you need to free up space or no longer need a backup:
- Go to the Backups panel of your VPS
- Find the backup you want to delete
- Click the "Delete" button
- Confirm the deletion
Important: You cannot delete a backup that is in progress. You must wait for it to complete or fail before deleting it. This action is permanent and cannot be undone.
Note: To disable automatic backups, you must first delete all existing backups for the server.
Backup Statuses
Each backup can be in one of the following statuses:
- Pending: The backup is queued, waiting to be processed
- In Progress: The backup is being created. You can see the progress percentage
- Completed: The backup completed successfully and is available for restore
- Failed: The backup failed. You can try creating a new one
- Deleted: The backup has been deleted
Pricing
Enabling automatic backups adds 20% extra to your monthly VPS cost. This covers both automatic and manual backups, PBS storage, and restore operations.
For example, if your VPS costs 10.00 EUR/month, the backup cost will be an additional 2.00 EUR/month.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a backup take?
The time depends on the data size of your server. Generally, a standard VPS backup takes between 2 and 15 minutes. You can follow the progress in real time from the panel.
Can I use my server while a backup is being created?
Yes, your server continues running normally during backup creation. However, we recommend avoiding intensive write operations during the process to ensure data consistency.
What happens if my VPS is powered off?
You can create backups with the VPS both powered on (active) and powered off (stopped). In fact, backups with the server stopped guarantee greater data consistency.
Can I restore a backup to a different VPS?
Currently, backups can only be restored to the same VPS where they were created.
What happens when the backup limit is reached?
When the maximum number of configured backups is reached, the system will automatically delete the oldest backup after the new backup completes successfully.
Are backups stored on the same server?
No. Backups are stored on dedicated Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) servers, physically separate from your VPS, ensuring your data is safe even in the event of a primary server failure.
Can I disable backups?
Yes, but you must first delete all existing backups for the server. This is a safeguard to prevent accidentally disabling backups while leaving orphaned copies.
